This post is dedicated to the men out there who follow Yuddy daily (probably not too many of you, but hey, ya never know!) Enough of the purses and fashion shows…here we go, men…
Being a man myself, I know how frustrating it is to have to shave everyday and sometimes say to myself, “I wish I could pull off a beard without looking like an escaped convict right out of county jail!”
Thankfully this month’s issue of Details has some beard-growing and up-keep tips…
You see the celebrity men such as Ryan Gosling, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Ryan Reynolds trying to pull off beards left and right, but it doesn’t always fit their character or it’s just a big ‘ol mess. Here are some tips on how to look your best and furriest from Damon Zilly, owner of Fred’s Barber Shop in LA:
1) How to grow it- If you’re clean shaven, you’ll need about a month to grow your facial hair to the right length–about two inches. Keep the stubble from getting itchy as it grows by washing it daily with a mild soap like Cetaphil. “A lot of guys can’t grow this type of beard,” Zilly says. Yeah, no kidding. The furthest I’ve gotten in the beard attempt was a goatee…and that didn’t last long at all!
2) How to trim it- Every two weeks (oh great, so we wait a month and now we have to keep watching after our facial hair?!), use and electric trimmer to take about half an inch off your beard. Shave stray hairs on your neck (gee, really?) up to your jawline with a razor. Unlike one Dancing With the Stars contestant, you shouldn’t shape the edges; the beard should look like it stops nautrally. Finally, use scissors to clip about half an inch from your mustache so it doesn’t grow over your lip. Okay, you can do this all yourself or I personally recommend spending a little dough and have someone else do it for ya!
3) How to care for it- To calm red skin under your beard, slather on moisturizer or toner. You can also use conditioner–yes, the same kind you put on your hair–to keep the beard soft. That just sounds gross, doesn’t it?
Anyway, there ya have it, men. Here are also a few products that the folks at Details recommend:
*Zirh Wash ($14.00 @ sephora.com)
*Leaf & Rusher Skin Tonic ($48.00 @ leafandbrusher.com)
*The Art of Shaving Moisturizer ($35.00 @ artofshaving.com)
Have fun, don’t irritate your skin and don’t cut yourself either!
