Fashion Fighting Racism

We know David Beckham is a fashion icon – probably due in part to his wife, the true fashion mogul of the family. But Becks seems more like the uber-trendy exception to the anything goes, rough-and-tumble world of sports. Yes, sports stars are always creating seemingly endless lines of footwear, and their fans sport their jerseys religiously. But is that really fashion? We think not.

However, a new sports-star-turned-philanthropist-by-way-of-fashion-designer is emerging from the sweaty heap. And to prove he’s legit, he’s teamed up with designer Tommy Hilfiger.

Theirry Henry is apparently known as “international soccer’s classiest goal scorer.” (Fashion Wire Daily) And while he’s the youngest soccer star in France, he’s little-known in the U.S. Ah, nothing like a match-up with a fashion mogul to help change that. And we’re not talking soccer match, here!

Henry recently created an anti-racism foundation, One 4 All. Now, that he’s putting the organization to an even better use than he may have first imagined. He’s working with Tommy Hilfiger to create a new fashion line named - can you guess? One 4 All - the proceeds of which will go to the foundation.

Henry, who also happens to be the official ambassador against racism for soccer’s international organization, the FIFA, said, “”I’m very happy to be able bring something to people who’ve had less luck than myself.”

The line is set to launch in conjunction with the opening of the Hilfiger Regent Street flagship store in London. The capsule collection will be “inspired” by Henry and include suits, sportswear, shoes and underwear.

“I am honored by Tommy’s interest in my foundation, and if I can do a little to help racism and social inequalities disappear that would be worth all my personal accomplishments,” says Thierry.

And if you prefer wearing your favorite sports star tucked away in a safe place – as opposed to emblazoned across your chest on a jersey - there’s a little something for you. Tommy will produce a limited series of 14 trench coats, each with lining featuring images of the star player. Of course you’ll have to fly to Paris and shell out 1,014 Euros, or $1,370, to get one – but it’s all for the cause!
