When Team USA competes at the Olympics in Beijing, they won’t be doing so in any ol’ apparel. No, they’ll be racing, swimming, running, throwing (etc., etc.) in style. Well, in a special kind of Olympic style.

You couldn’t really call Speedo’s red, white and blue performance swimsuit designed by Comme des Garçons high fashion, but as a design that favors function over form, you can see how it would be appreciated by its wearers.
“I was interested in expressing the energy and the power that comes from the spirit, embodied in the meaning of the calligraphy, together with the will to win for one’s country, symbolized by the iconic flag of the U.S.A.,” Comme des Garçons’ Rei Kawakubo said. The suit will be individually created for, and exclusively available to, all members of Team USA in Beijing.

One thing I don’t get is - in some of these sports - I thought less is more. I mean, swimmers shave their legs for that fraction of a second time difference, so wouldn’t a full body suit be a little counterproductive. It will be interesting to see how many people wear the suits.
