Last week we touched on the reality of being able to dress like a celebrity - or rather, actually beinig able to afford wearing clothes the stars design.Â
When celebs launch a line they almost always say something about how it reflects their personal style - and mention something about how they hope it’ll give fans a chance to put on their personal pieces. Not that celebrities are known for the down-to-earth factor, but how realistic is that statement? Are these fab styles cost prohibitive for the average adoring fan? Tuesday we mentioned fashionable lines for discount retailer Steve and Barry’s, as designed by Sarah Jessica Parker and Amanda Bynes - but how do the designs of other famous folk compare. Too pricy? Doable? Great deals?
Let’s take a looksie…
Love her or hate her, one thing’s for sure about J-Simp. She definitely has a notable style, so maybe it’s no surprise that business-wise, she’s one of the few celebs-turned-designers that has actually been somewhat successful with her line. She designs jeans and tops, but is probably most known for her shoes.
Some of the ones we found ranged from around $50 to $80. The boots she’s designed are priced a little steeper, but we found a cute ballet flat on sale for only $17! Even full-priced, for a trendy pump, $80 isn’t that out of the ordinary. And we’ve gotta say, while some of these shoes – much like some of the outfits Jess chooses to wear – are pretty heinous, most of them – also like some of the outfits she wears – are absolutely to die for.

J.Lo, by Jennifer Lopez
Let’s talk about one of the other star designers whose line has also been pretty successful from a business standpoint. Jennifer Lopez is another love-her-or-hate-her style icon, but she’s definitely made some waves. (Green Versace, anyone?) Her line is geared toward the junior set, and is popular for its wearable, Juicy Couture-like velour tracksuits, camis and sportswear. Sure, the pieces have been around for a while, but they’re still selling at places like Neiman Marcus. And the cute tank tops she designs are affordable for her teenage demographic with prices around $14.99 to $24.99 on sale. Full price is around $50.

Baby Phat by Kimora Lee Simmons
Kimora has made herself quite an empire. From her hip makeup line, to her hip hop fashion stylin’ (not to mention her new reality show). Baby Phat has quite a distinctive look – definitely a style for the street. And you probably don’t have to be a street walker to afford some of her T’s. In fact, you might not pay more than a preppy gal would at the gap. Her basic T is $29. Jeans are a bit more expensive, with prices from $60-$80, which is actually less than you’d pay for say, a designer pair of Joe’s Jeans. Plus, she has great things besides tees and jeans – like denim rompers, handbags, sunglasses and more.

Turns out, these three ladies might actually be catering to their fan base.
